Well, folks, I'll be working again on September 2nd. I interviewed yesterday for a bank branch position about 24 miles from my house. I've also been offered a mortgage service center job about four miles from my house. I decided to accept the mortgage service center job that is close to home. Mainly because the drive to the other job wasn't fun, nor will it prolong my car's life any (I like not driving much - means my car won't have to be replaced for a long time). Also, the other job was a big, big sales job. Like, sales was the main thing it had to with. I've been in sales...a lot. And I never really enjoyed it because I didn't like pressuring people to make decisions they may not be comfortable with. And, this job was in such a small town (less than 1,000 people), the manager pretty much flat out told me that most customers won't want to deal with me for a long time because I'm not from there and they won't want to get to know me.
The job in the branch in the small town will pay about a dollar more per hour, but that will go directly towards gas in my car for the drive. And of course moving up in the company will be more difficult there because the branch has four employees and they have all been there forever. I'm pretty sure if the other person they interviewed is from the town, they'll give the job to him or her. That's fine, because I haven't even started working at this mortgage job and I already love my boss. The starting pay for her department was lower than what I made when I left the company in February to begin the job I was eventually let go from. I told this current boss that the starting pay wasn't going to work out for me, and she said she wanted me to work there so badly that she offered me an immediate raise. Before I even start! Basically, I'm going to start out being paid what someone who has been there for six months will make. :) So, it's a job. And I'm happy with that. Plus, the mortgage job means no weekends or holidays. Ever. The branch job was one Saturday per month.
I hope I'm making the right decision. I am pretty much the worst decision maker ever, since I always end up second guessing myself. Hell, when I bought the Mazda back in August of 2009, I had anxiety attacks for two days following it. Because I thought I had made a mistake. It's all in how I was raised, I think. My mom was a worrier too.
Either way, I'm glad unemployment will be coming to an end for me!
Random car pic to accompany my rambling:
That's my '08 Mazda3 S Touring hatch and my friend's '12 Mazda3 i SV sedan. He obviously has more mods than I do. Maybe that will change now that I'll be working again?

A bank, huh? Have you decided which Acura you will buy?

Ha. This bank is the largest employer in my city, because they randomly chose this location to place one of their two or three nationwide mortgage service centers. There's one here in Kentucky, one in California, and one in Ohio. A smaller one exists in St. Louis, but nowhere near on the scale it is here. The pay actually isn't great. I'll be making around $21k a year. That may sound unlivable to some, but the cost of living here is astronomically cheap. Hell, my house only cost $68k and it was move in ready with several updates.

21k? I don't care how low cost of living is, holy fuck.
I live in a small city in Texas and making 52k feels like failure and poverty. I can't imagine making less than half that as an adult with responsibilities.

This is how the economy is and how things are where I am. This is one of the best jobs I can find.
My wife and I bring in about 80k a year together and we own our own home, have two relatively nice vehicles, and two smart phones as well as an iPad. And a savings account that most of my paycheck will go to. Hell, we also had a gym membership until I lost my job. Around here, 52k is rich.
According to my city's 2012 census, these is the demographics around here:
"The median income for a household in the city was $37,289, and the median income for a family was $41,333. Males had a median income of $33,429 versus $21,457 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,183. About 12.2% of families and 18.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.9% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over."

So your wife makes just under 60k then. That makes more sense.
I'm not knocking you or anything, just trying to do the math on typical bills and it wasn't adding up until I added the extra income from the spouse.
It does make me feel much better about myself though. My mom's been nagging about getting my shit together and making a real paycheck lately. She lives in Cali and keeps telling me about high school grads in their mid twenties who make more than I do. Which is more than a little disquieting when I'm paying my student loans.
